Mr. Byrd, 92 years, twice as majority leader of the Senate, was admitted to hospital last week with symptoms of heat exhaustion and severe dehydration as temperatures in the Washington area came to 100 degrees.
Initially expected to remain hospitalized for several days, but has since developed the conditions that the doctors described as “serious”.
